Voytko Farms at Auburn Township grows four soft fruits including black and red currants, which almost nobody in this region does, and had a hard year.

Prepicked produce, honey, maple syrup, a refreshment stand and a picnic area. The farm keeps a freezer: "if you need anything from the freezer, just call, text or email me and we can meet you at the farm."

Good to Know

This season ended early. In the farm's own words: "We will be closing Saturday, the 11th, probably for the season. The freezes in May and hailstorm this Spring were very damaging to the crop. We plan to continue to make improvements to the patch in anticipation of a better season next year."

On spraying, Voytko is unusually candid: "We try to keep the use of pesticides on our berries & produce to a minimum. Just as we all sometimes need medicine to treat our ills, crops occasionally have problems and pests which need to be controlled. It is only under these circumstances that we employ only the most environmentally friendly products and practices available."

Pro tip: currants are the reason to put this farm in the diary for next July. They are a sharp, seedy, intensely flavoured berry that supermarkets abandoned decades ago, and this is one of only three farms across nineteen US regions on this site where you can pick them yourself.
