Fitch's Farm Market at Avon runs its picking in bulk and by the bucket, and says so up front rather than letting people arrive expecting a punnet.

What You Can Pick

• Strawberries - "during the end of May/Beginning of June by the 4 qt bucket"
• Peppers and tomatoes - late summer
• Beans

How Picking Works

"We offer PYO in bulk quantity. All of our produce that is available through PYO has a minimum quantity that must be picked and purchased. We supply the baskets (except strawberries) but require that all produce is dumped out and transferred into other containers. We do offer plastic bags but ask that you bring your own container to transfer the produce into."

Good to Know

"Hours for picking are the same as store hours, except that we require you to arrive at least a half hour before closing hours."

And: "Pick your own is always weather permitting, please call ahead to make sure the fields are open."

Pro tip: bring boxes. The farm supplies the picking baskets and then wants them back, so if you turn up with nothing you will be carrying four quarts of strawberries home in a plastic bag. It also runs a strawberry-picking tutorial on the site, which is a kind thing to publish.
