Steffen Orchards at Fort Atkinson grows tart cherries on bushes rather than trees, which is unusual enough to be worth the drive on its own. This year, though, only the blueberries are open to pick.

The Cherries

The farm's own account is the best short description of dwarf cherry growing anywhere on this site: "We started growing tart cherries in 1983; we can't get enough of them. They are the largest crop on our farm. All of our cherries grow on bushes, that way they are easily accessible. We offer two tart cherry varieties: Romeo and Carmen Jewel."

But there is no cherry picking this year. The farm states it plainly: "U-Pick: no U-pick in 2026." The cherries are sold frozen instead, at $21 for a gallon bag of four and a half pounds or $155 for a forty pound box, and there is cherry juice at $15 a gallon. The farm also offers washing and pitting.

Pro tip: Romeo and Carmen Jewel are Saskatchewan bush cherries, bred to survive a prairie winter and to be picked standing up. If the u-pick returns in 2027, it is the only place on this site you can pick a cherry without a ladder.
