About This Farm
Barthel Fruit Farm has been at Mequon since 1840 and says so in its own strapline: "Offering Quality Produce, Pick Your Own and Family Fun Since 1840!" That makes it the oldest farm on this site by some distance.
What You Can Pick
- Apples - "Pre-picked Paula Red and Dandee Red apples and pick your own Paula Reds will start on September 4th."
- Popcorn - genuinely, and nowhere else on this site: "Pick your own popcorn is available in the fall. We have 2 varieties of popcorn."
Good to Know
The farm publishes pick-your-own prices and hours on its own site and updates them as varieties come in. It says plainly that it does not yet have dates for the later apples and asks you to check back.
For the popcorn it gives real instructions: "Pick the ears after the stalks are brown and dry, but before frost. The husks will be dry and the kernels hard."
Pro tip: Paula Red is an early apple that softens fast and cooks down to sauce almost on its own. Pick it the week it opens or not at all.
