Peck & Bushel in the Town of Erin is, in its own words, "the largest certified organic apple orchard in Southeastern Wisconsin", and it is certified organic for every crop.

What You Can Pick

• Apples - "most weekends from mid-August through mid October"

What It Costs

You buy a picking bag at the apple barn and the bag is the ticket:

• One peck bag, about ten pounds, lets up to five people pick: $34
• One quarter peck bag, about two to three pounds, lets one person pick: $12

That is the clearest per-head picking price in the region, and the peck bag is much the better value for a family.

The Spring Freeze

The farm names this year's weather itself: "Due to spring freeze events, some pick-your-own apples may be offered from orchard bins alongside traditional tree picking." It is the only farm in this region to say so, and it means some of what you pick may not come off a tree.

Good to Know

Weekends sell out. As of 23 August the site read "Pick-Your-Own apples are sold out for Sunday, August 23rd". Wear closed-toe shoes for sticks and bees, and the farm suggests sun cream and insect repellent on a warm day. Its own advice for the trees is worth following: "Twist apples off the branches carefully... our trees will thank you next year."

Cider is pressed on site and the doughnuts are fried through the day.

Pro tip: check the website before you drive. This is the only farm in the region that sells out its picking days, and it does so routinely.
