Chileno Valley Ranch at Petaluma opens its heritage apple orchard for a few weeks each autumn, by reservation only, and it is one of the quietest picking experiences within an hour of San Francisco.
Apples, from mid-September.
Reservations are required and they open at 9am on the first Monday of September, which for a small orchard an hour from the city means they go quickly.
The ranch now trades primarily as Mike and Sally Gale's grass-fed beef ranch, and its old chilenovalley.com address redirects there. The apple picking sits alongside the beef rather than being the main business.
No price is published.
Pro tip: reservations opening on a fixed Monday morning in September is the whole game here. Diary it. Turning up in October without one gets you a look at a locked gate and a very pretty drive.
